How To Set Up A Taco Bar

By Amy Bailey — September 06, 2016

Tacos could possibly be my favorite go-to meal. About once a week we gather around the table for a meal of either shrimp tacos, veggie tacos, or steak tacos. They’re flavorful, they’re easy, and being a salsa fiend they’re the perfect food for my palate’s addiction. With the taco craze going on across the country (i.e. this weekend I ventured to Dragonfly in Fairhope, Alabama whose menu boasts of items like chili braised chicken with kimchee slaw tacos, spicy eggplant tacos, and cobia tacos with pickled shishito peppers), why not make your own taco bar the centerpiece of your next gathering. You can also create flavor pairings to satisfy any taste – vegan, vegetarian, paleo, etc. Below MyScoop has some pairings using seasonal ingredients that will have your family and guests raving:

Think of what pairings you would like to put together. This may also be determined by what is available at your local market.

tacotuesdaybarHere are some flavor combinations we put together:

Flash fried fish with jalapeño pico de gallo, grilled avocado and cilantro crema

Sweet potato and black bean with heirloom tomato salsa, cilantro-cashew crema, and pumpkin seeds

Paprika sauteed shrimp with lime-cilantro slaw and grilled avocado

Sautéed summer veggie with pico de gallo and sour cream

Spicy jalapeno shrimp with jack cheese and heirloom tomato salsa

Other flavor combination ideas:

Lobster with chipotle crema, grilled avocado, and shredded red cabbage

Chipotle roasted beet with pico de gallo and cashew queso

Fried oysters with lime-cilantro slaw and grilled avocado

Carne Asada with white onion, dice tomatoes and jack cheese

Chorizo with pickled jalapeño and black bean

Lime chicken with grilled corn, cilantro crema and pico de gallo

Using colorful bowls pair the ingredients according to the flavor combinations.

Place warm tortillas in a big covered basket. (We prefer corn tortillas over flour.)

Encourage guests to experiment with their own flavor combinations as well.

Topping bowls you should always include in a Taco Bar:

Pico de gallo

Black beans

Diced onion

Diced tomato

Diced jalapeno

Sour cream

Jack cheese
